I must have spent 45 minutes doing it the first time, and maybe 15 minutes doing it this time. I just say to myself "I see 5 in the middle, and 6 peeking out on the right", and make sure I see roughly the same thing on the other side. If I get it wrong, I'm sure I will notice when I'm riding. =) Every time I’ve tightened the chain, I’ve become less worried about getting it absolutely exact. I recently struggled with adjusting my chain. You're right its a major pain on this bike and I've never felt satisfied that I've got it just right. The chain tension is fine but I find it hard to tell if its aligned exactly horizontally and vertically. It looks like it might be easier on the new F800GS. Did you notice how the tensioners differed on that one?
