John: I've got some photos of the VW up on http://picasaweb.google.com/helixblue/GettingAChristmasTree btw .. it's my wifes' 1971 VW Bus. I'm not a big fan of driving it due to the shifter, so I can't tease my wife about not wanting to ride her own motorcycle too much =) Glad to hear that your gal passed the class!

Every time I've tightened the chain, I've become less worried about getting it absolutely exact. I must have spent 45 minutes doing it the first time, and maybe 15 minutes doing it this time. I just say to myself "I see 5 in the middle, and 6 peeking out on the right", and make sure I see roughly the same thing on the other side. If I get it wrong, I'm sure I will notice when I'm riding. =)

Course I love posts like this. I recently struggled with adjusting my chain. You're right its a major pain on this bike and I've never felt satisfied that I've got it just right. The chain tension is fine but I find it hard to tell if its aligned exactly horizontally and vertically. It looks like it might be easier on the new F800GS. Did you notice how the tensioners differed on that one? Not sure its worth a $10k investment though :)

NICE VW! Do you have any pics of it online anywere?

I've got a heap of stuff to do on my Dakar now... Got a Pro-Oiler to fit, which means thoroughly cleaning the chain, which because it is an endless type, requires removing the swingarm. The swingarm is filthy as well. At my pace this will be a whole-weekend job. Also want to add more camber washers to my Fastway pegs to tilt them upwards a bit.

My girlfriend completed her learner motorcycle license course on the weekend and is excited about getting a bike. I'm excited too!
