While Wednesday’s are typically my stress days, fridays are almost always relaxing:

  • Out of bed by 8:30, granola bar and orange juice for breakfast!
  • Zero’d out my home and work e-mail inboxes
  • Stopped by the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area to do some quick birding: saw some baby blue birds, red-headed woodpecker, mockingbird, goldfinches, red-tailed hawk, carolina wren.
  • The Avon RoadRider tires work fine on gravel, btw.
  • Picked up some things at BMW (part list). Saw the first BMW F800GS to hit the Atlanta area. Drool.
  • Multiple salesman implored me to give it a demo ride
  • Rolled into work at 11:40am. Got some Bear Naked Granola and Vitamin Water XXX
  • Ran a team sync-up meeting over IRC
  • Saw that Sarah Palin is the Republican VP nominee — how genius is that! (kind of cute too!)
  • Got an odd recommendation from my boss to see the movie Primer.
  • Finally generated worthwhile testdata for my MapReduce job
  • Reserved my days off for visiting Bloomington for Dave & Marcia’s Wedding
  • Did some room scheduling for tech talks next week: Selenium and Erlang
  • Reviewed a 340 line python script, asked author to meet up with me next week to rewrite it in 40 lines
  • Lunch: Hamburger, Pizza, and some very yummy chocolate ganache for dessert
  • Got permission to work out of NC for the last week of September to hang out with my mum and sis
  • Conjured up a Ruby one-liner to download all photos in a Picasaweb album for a coworker:
  • curl http://picasaweb.google.com/helixblue/NoSunflowers#5238243013781788946 | \
    ruby -e '$stdin.readlines.join().scan(/s:\W(http.*?)\x27/) {
             system("curl -O #{$1.gsub("\\x2F", "/").gsub(/s\d+\//, "")}")}'
  • Helped a coworker in analyzing some really nasty legacy Python & SQL code
  • Loaned out $25 to a charcoal salesman in Tanzania and an auto mechanic in Azerbaijan
  • Got an e-mail at 3pm telling everyone to go home for the weekend. Left at 4pm instead.
  • Begged Dallas to go walking with me (even if her back hurt), walked along the Chattahoochee on Azalea Dr. We saw a water snake, ducks, spiders, baby goldfinch, rowers, and a goofy wife.
  • Went to Chaplins for dinner.. chimped photos, ate porkchops, and chuckled at the ditsiest women I had ever seen sitting at the next table.
  • Finally got around to spring cleaning: cleaned out one guest bedroom. Found 4 computers to recycle, and saw that I need to sell my old UNIX machines (two SGI’s, one IBM RS6k, one Sun Ultra 5, and an HP9k.
  • Crashed at midnight.

I hope your Friday was just as relaxing!

I'm not excited about the F800GS, but I am interested in giving it a go. I'd really like to move up to a twin or triple of some sort. I found the engine of the R1200GS just a bit too boring for me, though I did like the telelever front. I wouldn't mind a 1200GS, but the price differential between the 800 and the 1200 is pretty steep.

I think my next ride will be less off-road oriented. I really loved the way the Tiger 1050 felt, but am strongly considering a V-Strom 650 for cost reasons. I'll most likely be riding something different come January however!

love the snake pic! they are beautiful critters.

I did a huge computers-purge recently, I think 13 PCs and 5 or 6 CRTs. Old rubbish, DoNotWant.

Are you that excited about the F800GS? To tell the truth, I'm not... They won't be much lighter than the R1200GS. I guess there's some magical point along the axis of potential usage with serious offroad at one end and tarmac track days at the other end. Especially in light of the comments I've read about the F800 engine and really annoying vibration/resonance at some RPM.

I think for 90% of buyers the R1200GS will be a better choice overall, with its Telelever front end being so magically awesome for road use. It also has in its favour the fact that it is a well-known quantity now, unlike the F800GS

That's awesome that you're planning on visiting in a month. Will Dallas be here too or are you crashing at our house?
