In the wintertime, the weekly bike night at The Vortex in Little 5 Points, takes on a lower profile than it does in the summer. In the warmer months, you can easily see 120 bikes there. On top of the cold weather, it was pouring rain all evening. So, when I rolled into the parking lot, I wasn’t expecting a whole lot of bikes to be there. When I saw only one BMW airhead, it was a bit more sad than I had expected. Still, I knew that some folks from ADVrider.com would be showing up, so I hung out there anyhow.
Vortex has the best burgers in Atlanta, so I didn’t feel too bad eating their Raging Cajun with tater-tots by myself. People watching in a joint like this is always enjoyable, but eventually I got bored and began checking out Google Reader on my cellphone. I paid up, and headed out to take some outdoor photos of Little 5 Points, when TREX63 arrived on his BMW 1200GS.
We met up with one of his colleagues, Thomas, and grabbed a table in the porch. Thomas had been working in Saudi Arabia recently, so we spoke of the experiences of a foreigner working there. Due to segregation and other restrictions placed on foreign workers, Saudi is definitely not a place for me.
Within a few minutes, Mike showed up, the food and spirits arrived, and things began to get a bit more fun. We talked about motorcycle licensing differences between Germany and the USA, and swapped stories about crazy ex-girlfriends and ex-wives, though I didn’t have much to add in either bit. I’ve so far managed to go through life without running into any truly crazy people, just a few that are a little bit more weird than the general populace.

The ride home was really pretty horrible. The temperature dropped into the upper 30′s, it was raining cats & dogs, and the wind was blowing pretty hard. In the morning, I stopped by BMW Motorcycles of Atlanta to pick up some new heated Gerbing G3 gloves, but had not yet had the time to install them. I really should have done it in the parking lot at the Vortex, because by the time I got home, my hands were frozen almost to the point of numbness. I couldn’t even close my saddle-bags when I parked myself in the garage. Ugh.
