Ever wanted to see the internal connectors to a $1000 lens? Look above at my favorite new lens. I learned a lesson today: the base of the tripod collar on the Nikon 80-400mm can’t be used with the quick release grip, or the camera may come falling out at a moment’s notice. Unlike the Sigma 50-500mm, to rectify this, you have to spend an additional $40 to add a lens plate, or $195 to replace the whole blasted collar.
I expect the cost of this lesson to be a $350 repair bill. I wish I could say the photo I was taking at the time was worth it.. but it was just a red-shouldered hawk in our backyard instead of something more rare.
