Tonight I finally slew the beast that is my Hackintosh. The key, in a nutshell, is simple partitioning, and having the right BIOS options. Here is what she looks like:
In the end, I used Kalyway 10.5.1, Kalyway Gigabyte P35-DS4 Install Guide, NVInstaller v.31, and ALC889a section of the P35-DS3P Install Guide. It took about 3 days to get everything running, so if you’re just trying to save a few hundred bucks by going this route, don’t bother. Since my G5 died in November, I’m glad to have a desktop machine again.
No matter what I tried, I could not get Mac OS X to install as a triple-boot configuration with Linux and Windows XP. I ended up having to use the entire 320GB OS drive for Mac OS X, and will handle the others in VMware Fusion.
Showing a bit of negative karma, my Apple Cinema Display 23″ no longer powers on. It looks like it’s the power brick, and will cost some money to replace. I had this happen before, and ended up buying one from eBay that was similarly shot. Ahwell. Next issue?
