I've been forcing myself to use Vi lately even though I prefer Emacs, since I use things like a Buffalo TeraStation & GP2X that lack the power to run Emacs. If you're running Ubuntu with Gnome, try out Gedit. It's a nice mouse-oriented editor although it isn't as powerful as Emacs. Giving up Skype will be a pain, but they don't make a PowerPC version. I really enjoy using the video chat, but now that my family is audio-only, I can most likely get away with some other kind of VoIP option. The Gizmo Project does not support PowerPC either.
