No matter what research they do, I'm going to tell you it's a bad idea to be both (a) in my blind spot and (b) not in your lane where I check before I merge. Also, most likely it's illegal--in most of the US, you're either a pedestrian or a vehicle, and it's as illegal for a person on a bike to split lanes as it would be for me to try it in my Buick.
